What is Chase Stories? Honestly, I’ve delayed writing this for over five years out of fear and complacency. It’s scary putting this out into the world, but perhaps my story can help others. If you’ve followed my Instagram for a while you’ve probably noticed the recurring hashtag, #chasestories, (if you don’t follow me on Instagram, you probably should… hint, hint). I’ve used this hashtag for years, but have never explained the meaning behind it and its importance to me.
Over social media and in person I give off a very silly and adventurous persona. I crack jokes, make conversation, go on spontaneous trips, meet up with you last minute at the bar and happily knock back a couple shots. I like to think that the Marcelino a lot of people see is a fun, outgoing person to be around. However, what most people don’t see is the amount of self doubt I have and the anxiety I feel about my life and not knowing my place in the world. I struggle to keep up that persona. There are many times I’d much rather not be doing or talking to anyone and If I let myself, I’d stay home most days in bed with my soccer sweats on watching Netflix and eating pizza (which I am a firm believer is very necessary every once in a while) because of fear, anxiousness, and complacency. These are a handful of things I consistently work on, so that I don’t fall into that headspace. (Spoiler, it’s been 5 years and I still struggle with these things.)
This is where the phrase Chase Stories comes along. After a particularly low point, I decided I didn’t want to continue this way, so I “Chased Stories”. I knew I had to go out of my way to push my comfort zone, work through my laziness and get out and live. It is easy for me to get lethargic and fall into bad habits so I started off small. I chose to do things that created a lot of joy in my life. Instead of staying home and saying no to hanging out with friends, I said yes. I woke up extra early to catch sunrises and take photos. I chose to take action. Those small actions created a chain reaction that led to me traveling across the world to places where I couldn’t speak the language, hiking to the top of mountains where the rocks looked like rainbows, traveling alone in a foreign country and introducing myself to a group of strangers that would later become my travel companions, and so much more. Along the way, I’ve created a network of new and old friends to Chase Stories.
Chase Stories is a call to action. It is the everyday actions we make to better ourselves. It is the willingness to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. It is the journey we take in order to find our passions and make our dreams turn into a reality. And eventually, it’s the adventures we look back on with great friends and rocking tunes. Chase Stories are the memories we make along this path we call life and are the things we’ll cherish the most when our time is done. This isn’t an easy path. It’s something that is a lot harder for some than others. Sometimes you’ll forget about it and fall back into old habits of fear and want to choose the easy route. That’s ok. We all go through ups and downs. Take it in strides. I need to constantly remind myself of this too. We are all going through something.
My hope is that Chase Stories can become a community of people who are striving to become better and chasing what makes them happy. A place where people can share their passions and the stories that have gotten them to where they are today. If you’ve gotten this far, thank you for reading and being a part of my journey. Let’s go Chase some Stories!
